Mercedes-Benz Changes Stance on EVs

Mercedes-Benz built their brand on luxury and performance. As such Mercedes-Benz of Honolulu and Mercedes-Benz of Maui weren't surprised in the least when they first announced that the company would remain completely loyal to developing their high-performance luxury models rather than enter into the emerging hybrid and EV markets. That said. We're willing to bet there are at least a handful of speed fiends in Hawaii with a soft spot for the environment who are still a little disappointed.
Chin up! It looks like Mercedes-Benz is changing their tune. Ola Kallenius, Chairman, Board of Management, Mercedes-Benz AMG has revealed that the automaker is now reconsidering an "electrified"1 future. This doesn't, however, mean the company's two pillars are shifting. They will continue to base all business and design decisions on luxury and performance.
The reason for the change of heart? Simply that hybrid and EV technologies have come a very long way since their first announcement. At first such innovations were synonymous with yawn-provoking performance. Now, Mercedes-Benz, is confident that they can develop hybrid and EV cars with as much adrenaline-pumping power as their standard petrol-powered lineup.
The first model we expect Mercedes-Benz to help launch is the SLS AMG E-Cell, currently under AMG Division development. No specs are available at this time. But, Kallenius indicates the design will not be bogged down by additional weight and that enthusiasts can expect its performance to be "exceptional."2 Orders for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell are to be taken starting in 2012 with deliveries following shortly thereafter in 2014.
