Revamped Mercedes-Benz B-Class to Offer More Newness than Any Other Auto

With zero compromise in comfort and spaciousness, Mercedes-Benz has managed to substantially enhance the agility, efficiency, safety and performance of its new B-Class slated to premier at the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany, September 13-25, 2011.  Perhaps most exciting , though, is the fact the next-gen B-Class is the first Mercedes-Benz model built on the automaker's latest-and-greatest, front-wheel-drive platform.

To match its latest, state-of-the-art platform, Mercedes- Benz has added an all-new range of four-cylinder engines. This includes a peppy 1.6-liter, direct-injection gasoline-powered engine that promises 120 horsepower and 147 lb.-ft. of torque in the base B180 and 154-hp and 184 lb.-ft. of torque in the higher-level B200. That's not all. In addition, Mercedes-Benz is planning to introduce a new 1.8-liter common-rail diesel-powered engine and optional seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

To optimize the speed and efficiency of all B-Class trims, Mercedes-Benz has worked painstakingly to improve the vehicles' aerodynamics. On a yet-to-be-revealed narrow-tire BlueEfficiency variant, Mercedes-Benz was able to drop the drag coefficient to as little as 0.24, putting it on par with the E-Class.

Inside the new B-Class, drivers will find design elements largely inspired by the range-topping Mercedes-Benz SLS. Among the host of impressive options available are a free-standing color screen (for navigation and entertainment systems), Internet access, blind-spot assist, lane-keeping assist, adaptive headlamps, collision-prevention assist, and speed-limit-sign recognition.

The PRE-SAFE preventative occupant protection system is, however, standard fare. The Mercedes-Benz B-Class actually represents the first time such a system has ever been available in its respective category. Stand-out features include reversible belt tensioning and auto closing of side windows and sunroof, in case of compromising lateral dynamics.
